The experience is magnified by the dragons' deep purring and music that brings the whole audiobook alive.Ĭressida Cowell’s How to Train Your Dragon is a tale of courage, friendship, loyalty and some fierce, intelligent, scary dragons. It’s hard not to fall in love with his interpretation of Toothless, the stuttering and lisping tiny dragon. He also voiced the dim-witted Viking Spitelout in the 2010 Dreamworks movie adaptation and spin-off TV series. Tennant (best known as the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who) lends his trademark Scottish accents to create larger-than-life characters. By the time he becomes a hero, chieftain and fearless sword fighter, he has gained enormous power over a host of terrifying dragons. Listeners of this exciting audiobook series, read by the legendary David Tennant, will be relieved to know that the life of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III gets better. The mockery and taunting are never-ending. Unfortunately, not all goes to plan, and he catches the smallest dragon, named Toothless, that’s ever been seen. Man, I just wish this book had been around when I was a teenager, I’d felt so much more understood! But I’m very happy that it’s here and that people are reading it and finding themselves in it. I’ve been okay with being ‘different’ than most for a long time, and a lot of my friends are pretty introverted but I still felt like a lot of the things I saw in this book were just me being silly. And that so many more people have as well, when I read the reviews and the tweets and such! There were things in there that I for years thought only I was going through (like feeling like you’re disappearing when making small talk) and honestly reading that someone else has experienced these things too has made me feel so much better about it. Honestly this entire book was so ridiculously relatable to me, that sometimes it almost felt like Tung had managed to grab hold of my diary. The collection shows her struggle from childhood (through flashbacks) through university to when she has a real ‘grown-up’ job, all the while struggling with the amounts of socialization that’s expected of her. More precisely, it’s about her discovering the concept of introversion and accepting herself. Quiet Girl in a Noisy World is a journal comic collection by Debbie Tung about her life as an introvert. It used to drive me mad! Learning how to self-edit was probably the biggest thing I gained from the course, apart from finding my brilliant writing group. I would stare at my laptop for hours, trying to perfect a single sentence. Before it, I really struggled to edit my work. The course had a huge influence on me as a writer. But the bourbon companies prevailed, with large companies retaining control of numerous brands.Ĥ. In the 1940s, the bourbon industry faced the federal government’s shakedown on monopolies. This wasn’t financially feasible for many of the smaller distillers, making them susceptible to purchase by larger distilleries.ģ. During WWII, bourbon distillers were obliged to create industrial alcohol. World War II was largely responsible for the conglomeration of bourbon brands. “Bourbon was a matter of national health and security for the time.”Ģ. “During Prohibition, everyone was ‘sick’ and they needed medicinal whiskey,” Minnick says. In the same era, the Spanish Influenza was spreading rampantly, and whiskey was believed to be the only treatment. While alcohol was outlawed in the U.S., you could still get your hands on it in some states by claiming a medical need. In some ways, Prohibition made illness seem widespread. Here are just a few of the things we learned.ġ. Last week, in an exclusive chat with Tales 365 members, he spoke with us about bourbon’s past, present and future. Writing with style and expertise, Minnick’s extraordinary knowledge of all things bourbon has warranted numerous awards and accolades. His books, “Whiskey Women,” “Bourbon Curious,” and most recently, “Bourbon: The Rise, Fall and Rebirth of American Whiskey,” are esteemed collections of in-depth whiskey history, culture and insights on enjoying the spirit. Fred Minnick is perhaps the foremost name in bourbon writing. The Deadites get a new chant (“Stars in our eyes”). Ash is sarcastic/badass/goofy all rolled into one. All the right bullet points are addressed. Ash’s voice is more or less accurate and there’s a good mix of horror/comedy which is pretty much the defining trait of Army of Darkness. His motivation is pretty much defined as wanting the opposite of whatever the Deadites want. The Deadites, evil zombie/demon things, want what’s on the space station and Ash wants to stop them. Ash find himself in space due to universal McGuffin, The Necronomicon. That’s the nice thing about Army of Darkness, if you’ve seen the movies you can pretty much get the rest from context no matter what the medium. I didn’t read issues 1 or 2 but I don’t think I really need to. Do you like Evil Dead/Army of Darkness? Do you like things occurring in space? If you answer “yes” to either of those questions then you can probably add a point to the final score. So, that’s kind of the biggest hurdle to overcome. Also, I think, a gangster makes a gold grill out of the Leprechauns gold. Except that last one, while technically not in space, is worth mentioning. Jason X (Jason in space), Leprechaun 4: In Space, Hellraiser 4: Bloodlines (in space) and Leprechaun 5: In The Hood are a few examples. Usually space is where movie franchises go to die. The book describes Binem's childhood in the rural Polish village of Radziejow and details how his family and community were devastated by the trauma of the Nazi invasion and unimaginably cruel occupation of Poland.Īt the age of 24, Binem escapes a German forced labor camp and struggles to survive the harsh Polish winter by sleeping in haystacks during the day and begging food from peasant farmers at night. Over 30 years in the making, this unique and extraordinary account was recreated from cassette tapes which were recorded in the early 1980s and later found in the bottom of a closet as well as videotaped interviews by Steven Spielberg’s Shoah Foundation. Have you ever heard of a Jew who saved a Nazi's life? Who evaded capture by pretending to be a Polish peasant, a communist spy, a partisan, and a rabbi? Who spent months starving in the woods, sleeping in haystacks in the freezing cold, only to finish off the war in a luxurious palace as the guest of a Polish princess? |
